like to be treated For Informatech employees that should mean that timely response is the norm What if you don t know the answer to the question being posed Well how would you respond if it were face to face You would say I m not sure how to answer you right now Let me get back to you tomorrow or the end of the week or by a specific date Never is ignoring the request acceptable There I got that off my chest Oh in case you can t get hold of me here s my contact info Phil Palmer Phone 801 386 0683 email phil palmer informatech cr skype phil palmer twitter pjpalm801 Share this Email Facebook Twitter Like this Like Loading Related December 6 2010 by pjpalm801 Categories Collaboration 1 Comment Post navigation Anthropological meaning of work Good article with links about Web Tools for your Business One thought on Communication Etiquette 101 Oscar Marin says December 6 2010 at 7 31 pm This happens to me all the time and I think I provoke it in other occasions In distributed work environments people is using more and more ineffective communication tools like IM or even worse email to exchange critical information The problem with those tools is that sometimes it allows the other party to ignore the message or in some cases due to malfunctioning of the tool employed the sender of the message perceives that is being ignored That is why nothing is going to beat face time not an apple related statement here but as ideal as it is becoming more and more difficult to achieve so what to do Is my experience that for prompt effective and reliable communication for distributed teams voice should be used as much as possible if video conferencing

  • Anthropological meaning of work | Informatech CR Blog
which sustain the business model If you are not good for a job well you are not good for a job and that simple fact means you may not be suitable to work in that line of business But when you are suitable when you are a valuable contributor and when you are providing more that just earnings to a company if even when that is the case you are still replaceable and set apart mainly because of what you cost then something is really wrong with that company s concept of the value of work I think and it is me of course that a world driven by these capitalized human principles may lead people to believe that capital is more important than themselves and in such a scenario people are prevented form discovering the real foundation of what work is really all about people When I started to realize that people in any scenario an spite what any CEO may say people are what really matter in the end I started to think differently about the real meaning of having a job I started to understand what I should try to focus on when I chose where to work and more importantly not to work I think the real meaning of work from a human perspective hence the anthropological word in the title is to embrace an activity that will provide you with your human basic needs but also something that will dignify you as an individual and that can bring joy and meaning to your existence It doesn t come for free I have to say We still sometimes need to work on things we don t like just to make a living but again as I said before we always have the choice to change what we are doing and search for a place to work where we can have enough money dignity joy and satisfaction as human individuals who transcend the mere material things we can buy Just ask yourself if you see a guy on the street playing the harmonica for some coins would you think right away that he is a loser even if the guy is visibly happy I m not saying we all have to be poor or working pro bono to be happy I m just asking what will you think right away of someone else who is poor by choice or works pro bono At this point in my life I rather chose a place where I m eager to go to work everyday because of the great working environment somewhere where I will feel appreciated even if I m not a money making machine a place where I can be myself and at the same time do what I love even to the point of be willing to go the extra mile Just because And if I ever need to chose a fashion place just for the extra bucks which may happen out of multiple reasons life sometimes

on Palm really Do you remember that nice small gadget called the Palm Pilot that everybody wanted desperately and made you look so cool just a few bunch of years ago I bet you even have one in your drawer but are just too embarrassed to take it out and show it alongside your friend s shinny new smartphones But I m diverting Have you considered the fact that those once cool little machines may be capable of running something else than the now dreadful PalmOS Why on earth would you want Linux on that thing anyway Well why not As it turned out to be I found that from a learning perspective trying to fit a standard Linux Kernel into a Palm is just what the Geek Doctor prescribed not to mention that by doing it you do are entitled to show off your Palm and brag about it with your smartphone friends how about that for a spin So I figured out that having nothing better to do on a Saturday night I might just as well write about my little Linux and Palm Frankenstein project What do you know I can even put a few words the Android topic as well if it suits What do you need to put Linux in your Palm Fortunately it has been done before by a couple of ex PalmOS developers in search of redemption from working so many years with such a hideous thing PalmOS that is So you may want to check a site called Hack Dev There s a nice working version of it for the Palm TX but of course if we stop there that wouldn t be fun and we will spoil Christmas too soon So where to start Well we need to follow some sort of steps like the following Get a Palm Seriously Using Palm simulators is cheating on yourself I have a Palm TX so I got started with that not that I need another one though Decide how you want to boot the Linux image once you have it Basically PCs have Master Boot Records and embedded devices have Bootloaders Palms come with a ROM image with everything in it including a Bootloader So if you want to override what s in the Palm you ll need a way to rewrite the ROM and of course you need to backup your current one if you ever want to get your old PalmOS back say when you bragged enough There s a nice alternative though most of the latest Palm devices latest I mean from 2003 up have external memory card support SD Memory Stick etc I found we can use a PalmOS program that will act as a Bootloader using an image that could be stored in your SD card Pretty convenient huh Now we can keep the PalmOS ROM and test out our awesome Linux images using only our external card If we screw up just reboot and Palm OS will

  • Outsourcing offshore: Costa Rica, where are we? | Informatech CR Blog
reduce costs India is still country 1 in the top of offshore service providers around world However in the recent years some other countries have started to grow and follow it very close like China Philippines Ireland India bests Costa Rica in most of the decision criteria according to Gartner studios but I would say it is because of the proportion of people for example if 20 of Indian citizens speak English it represent more than 200 million people So they have more English speaking people However Costa Rican accent is more familiar for the US people India graduates about 300 000 software developers every year while Costa Rican public universities receive every year only about 400 people So their employment pool is definitively wider than Costa Rican However some companies that have experience with both India and Costa Rica say ticos are more proactive I think it is hard to compare it because of the huge proportional differences between the two countries We found cases of US companies that went to India failed and then came to Costa Rica and succeed We also found cases of companies that currently have services offshore in both countries with success they decide countries according to each specific need Costa Rica has experienced a great increment as an offshore provider in the recent years and today is part of the 7 Latin America countries that are part of the top 30 world countries to contract offshore services according to Gartner As an advantage Costa Rica is located in a geographical strategic location pretty close to time zone of most of North America and easy and cheap to travel Also Costa Rican pronunciation is very friendly for US people professionals here are proactive dedicated have willing to learn to improve and to grow those
