    years phone Museo de Oro Precolombino Perhaps one of golden attractions within the large museum compound of our capital city comprising the largest collection of objects by which material its name was crafted Oro gold It consists of about 1600 pieces of pre Columbian gold dating from 500 to 1500 AD and divided in two levels The Introductory Section on the second floor exposing an interpretation of the social and cultural evolution of our native cultures and on the third floor the Gold Pieces Exhibition The Central Bank of Costa Rica initially begun the arduous task of collecting the various pieces between the years of 1950 to 1974 and as the collection grew it was clear that a Museum needed be built specifically for the hosting of the much greater show The permanent museum s construction was expensive perhaps so much so it can be compared to that of the National Theater located in the subterranean base of the Plaza de la Cultura By 1983 it also was employed in the showcasing of several temporary expositions and by 1985 it is officially inaugurated as the Alvaro Vargas Echeverri Pre Columbian Gold Museum The museum presents several specialized shows for tourists one such show called the Noche de Oro Golden Night in which tourists are guided through the precincts by bilingual guides autochthonous music is played for the visitors and precious souvenirs are granted as gifts Overall several such programs are offered with many different angles of study for those interested in Costa Rica s ancient history Important FAQs The Museum opens Monday to Sunday from 9 30 am to 5 00 pm On Wednesdays on the first day of each month free entrance is permitted by nationals and tourists with ID The entry fee is of 9 USD for international

    its world class National Park system There are approximately three dozen parks composed of national parks biological reserves wildlife refuges monuments and recreational areas These make up almost 12 of Costa Rica Forest reserves and indigenous reservations protect additional land areas This raises the total amount of protected area to 27 of Costa Rica This remarkably enlightened view has produced a wide variety of benefits for the wildlife of course but also for visitors and the local populace that work in tourism and conservation related activities There is a plan to link some of these protected areas into so called regional conservation units By joining national parks private conservation areas and others bridges can be created which would allow wildlife to migrate and move through larger areas that protect their natural territories There are several private conservation efforts in Costa Rica several with lodging and tour facilities These are efforts to create a sustainable protection program where tourism pays for the conservation of the land This model has proven to be very effective 12 7 of Costa Rica s territory is protected in national parks and biological reserves These protected areas a total of 26 national parks and 8 biological reserves provide economical social and institutional benefits thanks to activities such as hydroelectric power tourism scientific research and environmental services among others These activities generated an income of approximately 814 965 US million dollars for the country in 2002 according to the study This makes the national parks and reserves attractive spots for Ticos as well as for tourists Tourism represents the greatest contribution of national parks and biological reserves with a total amount of approximately 708 470 US million dollars in 2002 A study carried out by Centro Internacional de Política Económica CIMPE at Universidad Nacional and the National

    Central America s highest peak The park is contiguous with La Amistad International Peace Park to the south together they form the Amistad Talamanca Regional Conservation Unit Cloud forest above 2 500 meters covers almost half the park which features three distinct life zones the park is topped off by sub alpine rainy páramo marked by contorted dwarf trees and marshy grasses that dry out on the Pacific slopes January May Much of this area still bears the scars of a huge fire that raged across 2 000 hectares in April 1992 The region is still trying to recover from this and even worse fires in 1976 and 1985 Cerro Chirripó was held sacred by pre Columbian peoples Tribal leaders and shamans performed rituals atop the lofty shrine lesser mortals who ventured up Chirripó were killed Magnetic fields are said to swing wildly at the top particularly near Los Crestones huge boulders thought to have been the most sacred of indigenous sites This is a very powerful reason why people keep visiting this place besides its surroundings Many Ticos choose to hike the mountain during the week presiding Easter when the weather is usually dry Avoid holidays when the huts may be full The hike is not the easiest one but it does not require technical expertise The trails are well marked and basic mountain huts are close to the summit You must stay overnight in San Gerardo de Rivas where you begin your hike early the next day Only 60 visitors are allowed within the park at any one time You may be told there s a waiting list Experienced hikers recommend showing up anyway as there are usually lots of no shows And nobody is allowed to hike without a guide The weather is unpredictable and potentially dangerous
